Timberdoodle's Review

Little Pilgrim's Progress

Nearly 60 years ago, author Helen L. Taylor took John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and simplified the vocabulary and concepts for young readers while preserving the integrity of the tale. The original Pilgrim's Progress was a great adventure story with powerful allegorical treasures. But in its original dialect, it was beyond young children's comprehension.

Little Pilgrim's Progress, however, is a delightfully reimagined telling of John Bunyan's spiritual classic. It maintains the original plotlines of Bunyan's classic while telling the story in a way that kids can understand.

In this visionary edition, renowned illustrator Joe Sutphin portrays the characters of Bunyan's tale as furry creatures living in a woodland realm. The lavish grayscale illustrations, save for the first letter of each chapter illuminated in a deep shade of red, help to bring Little Pilgrim's Progress alive.

The characters have been chosen with great care; a chicken as Fearing, a crow as Talkative, a weasel as Unbelief, and a wise old owl as Evangelist. These choices add a layer of richness and fresh meaning previously missing to this tale. Of particular appeal to children ages 6-12 years, Little Pilgrim's Progress beautifully captures, both in words and in illustrations, the struggle of living faithfully in a world distorted by sin.

Perfect

I cannot express to you how my my child and I love reading this book together. I have never read the original Pilgram's Progress so this ia a treat for me as well! The language at times is very similar to the original older English words. It is good because it allows us to stop and talk about what each of the names mean and how they pop up in our lives. Some may find the older language and having to look up the names more of an annoyance, but again I feel like it is helping me to see more of the nuances in my own walk with Christ and then better able to find relevant examples for my 6 year old. She loves it! The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and inspiring.

Beautiful story and artwork

This book is a true piece of art. Love this child version of the classic Christian story. The artwork is so beautiful that I find myself gravitating to this book wanting to pick it up. I am enjoying reading the book myself for enjoyment and am looking forward to reading it with my children when I am through.
